A Chiefs Brief for the forthcoming Police Protest – 10th May2012 – Part 1

This is a message from @SirIanBlair on the eve of May 10th 2012 – I want to explore a few things that are whirring through my mind. British Policing and the Office of Constable, the mainstay of policing is facing big challenges; political intervention in policing is rife and this is bad news for both the rank and file and the public. Yet I see no leadership from police leaders.

Police Leaders must accept some apportion of blame for the position we are in today for they have allowed police organisations to outgrow unnecessary functions and roles; yet the pinnacle of British Policing is the Officer and PCSO on the beat. Analysts analysing statistics and call answering times; PA’s on a power trip and civilian managers who think they are sworn senior officers. This is the monster that Labour created; police leadership has lost its way.

Leadership is a strong word; it is about how an individual leads others during difficult times. It is about values and ethics. It is about the core organisation and about how senior management teams manage functions within an accountable framework. Leadership is about how Supervisors manage their own teams without forgetting who they are there and the office of constable. At the lowest levels leadership exists and this is something we should be proud of. #Holdtheline – but at the highest levels, however, there has been little “sovereign” leadership, just personal career strategising and the next promotion board.

Only a few Chief Officers have come out to say they oppose the pace of these cuts. One has resigned, whilst the majority have remained quiet. When they have nothing else to lose they will all come out and play as our friend; yet friends are the ones you can trust, who are with you through thick and thin. Not one ACPO rank has come out and said they will find the time to join the protests. This type of leader is precisely the type of leader that policing does not need; yet it is the “careerist” that the Higher Potential system has created.

I see some individual leaders protecting their own empires and aspirations courting govt. offices for awards; but these inspire no one. I saw no co-ordinated rejection of Hutton, Winsor or Neyrouds reforms from either ACPO or the Supts. Association. What a debacle.

Now, I have seen many leaders come forward recently, some retired, some anonymous and most from the lower ranks. James Patricks video was an inspirational calling to the front lines; the last call to attention. The twitter hash tags created by many low ranking/retired/police staff individuals  #antiwinsornetwork #holdtheline #stopthepolicecuts and images created by similar ranks are showing ACPO and the others the true meaning of pure leadership. Some of these tags have  trended and made the national news. That my dear fellows is pure leadership. We are the leaders.

I now want to address young in service Bobbies – I have no pleasure in announcing the quiet behaviour of some towards this demolition of the police service; however from youngsters I can understand their stance. Of course these new candidates cannot miss what they never had; that is a fact. And like most youngsters they do want to drive fast cars and catch criminals. That is their priority.

For time served colleagues, though, policing cuts of this type are not to be taken lightly. The younger ones need to remember with some respect that these old fellas and lasses have got the t shirt and have been doing the job for years.  #Holdtheline.

There will come a point in time where you will earn less than a train or bus driver. Do you really want to go back to policing 1980’s style? If you do and you think it’s acceptable then expect to fight communities and youngsters; expect to have petrol bombs thrown at you, expect to be isolated on estates, with little or no back up. Listen carefully to what we are saying. Expect officers to be injured. And with the media and phone technology expect something you do to be recorded and face the risk of losing your job because of being misinterpreted. If you cannot support the Federation now, who will support you when you face a disciplinary chaired by a Tesco manager?

Young ones – There will come a time when your body will not be able to take the ever changing shift patterns that managers put your way because govt. policy allows them to do this. Change after change after change. You might be OK to work shifts in your 20’s, but when you fall into a relationship, unless your partner understands, it will be a difficult road. And when you have children you might not be able to spend the time that others do with theirs. Think carefully about Winsor’s proposals.

In your mid 30’s you will begin to feel shattered. And at 40 your body will start to slow down. And you will look at the new recruits joining then. They will be able to run faster than you; they may even be fitter. But you will be expected to be an operational beat bobby at the age of 60/65. The average life expectancy of a police officer following 30 years service after retirement is low. The govt. will use every tactic to divide the service, but you must be united with your time served colleagues.

I have a message for CID officers too – Do you really believe that these changes won’t affect you? I think you’ve got away lightly with reform in the past, but not this time. Don’t be fooled for these changes have been thought through by clever civil servants in their offices. Just because you are not uniform do not expect to walk away. The changes will affect your salary, your overtime, your workloads, your stress and your length of service.

We have 130,000 sworn officers, yet most of the e- petition signatures opposing these cuts show no significant take-up. If you want these issues debated in the House of Commons then sign the petitions. It’s your call. You can take action in many many ways and take control back from these politicians who really do not understand policing or your conditions of service.

Even I believe there is a need for police efficiency at peak times so that you have back-up, (Eve’s and nights). I also understand the need to get officers onto the streets but equally when they are injured on duty, or through no fault, they need somewhere to recuperate. Police reform must be balanced; it must not put the public or officers at risk. And there must now be some professional leadership from ACPO and the Supers. Put your careers on hold; the front line are calling you.

My message for us all is simple – We are going through unprecedented austerity. We know this. We are going through a double dip recession. We know this. We want change but 20% police budget cut/reduced numbers together with recession conditions set the environment for discontent and civil unrest. Crimes will rise, especially robbery/knife/violent crimes.

Police Officers are not greedy; far from it; those standing up are trying to protect you, but they need your support. Their goodwill will has been stretched by Winsor, Hutton and a Police Minister who is never there; Herbert. Some are getting physically drained and that is dangerous for their health and safety. We therefore wholeheartedly ask you to stand united and support (1) a Royal Commission, (2) and an independent enquiry into the mismanagement of police reform by successive govts. #antiwinsornetwork

  1. Brilliant article. I hope everyone will share this as widely as possible. Regarding the low levels of response to the e- petitions, I’m convinced [with the oh so marvellous benefit of hindsight] that just ONE petition would have seen higher levels of signatories. Could we perhaps just focus on one from now? Any ideas on this?

      • I started the e petition on Industrial Rights in order to protect a range of terms and conditions, engage the public on privatisation of the police, and to change the ‘cosy’ FED culture.

Sadly, in the current climate of Fed inability to confront and challenge this vicious government across ALL matters, including Working Time [ On Call, for example], the ‘protect police pensions’ appears inwards looking.

Petition 31250 does not reflect a ‘spirit of going further’, it explicitly states it!

The Fed culture of ‘quiet diplomacy’ with Dave et al, has palpably failed to protect us, and, by extension, the public’s entitlement to a State Service.

It is a pity if colleagues feel that by concentrating their ‘electronic vote’ on pensions, they are moving the game on by ignoring the Article 11 issue.

  2. Well the above says it all; only thing needed to add was the public need to stand with police on these issues !!!!!!

  3. This is so true. We were supported by Mrs Thatcher, even if it was for her own ends, we ended up better paid and looked after by our bosses. However, as stated above, the new senior officers are there just to climb up the promotion ladder upon the backs of their ‘subordinates’. There is no care in our police service from above any longer. It’s a case of ‘I’m all right Jack, I am your ‘chief constable.’ We don’t want to get to a situation where we lose completely the confidence of OUR public. Dougal Plodd

  4. Somehow I feel this just cannot be the same Ian Blair who was in charge of the Met, that was a man who was the master of spin very political and the lefties friend. I cannot fault the above, I detest ACPO and have little time for the Superintendents Assoc as they never ever do the right thing by condeming the attacks over the years [Sheehy/Winsor] to name but a few. I am retired by 17 months now but will be joining the march to show my support. I enjoyed my 34 years and am proud to have served but now angry at the disgraceful demolition of the Office of Constable and the shortsightedness of Politicians to try and save money. A Royal Commission is needed not a cull by politically motivated penpushers whom have no idea of how the Police operate.

    • Spot on sir! Couldn’t agree more. This is a cost cutting operation at ours, and the public’s expense. Who in there right mind would want to be a new recruit now? The MP’s and PM who all seem to have enjoyed a cushy ride in this current climate need a wake up call. As it is us and our brothers and sisters in the Fire Brigade and NHS who will once again come to the rescue and clear the mess up that this misguided and disjointed government has created.
I will be marching as will thousands of you, and I simply hope and pray that the government realise what there doing before it is too late?

      Let us do our jobs!

  5. You can’t run the Police service as a private company, it’s not here to make money. Senior officers need to stop manipulating the crime figures and start being honest to the public (honesty and integrity amongst senior ranks no longer exists). Senior ranks need to stop creating red tape just to prove they can create change for their next promotion all that does is creat problems for others.

Politicians will only start to understand what the Police do when their sons, daughters and wives get assaulted or raped or their property gets damaged or broken into, then and only then will these self gloating incompetent idiots that run the country start to back the Police. Let us do what we all joined up to do, help those that need it and fight crime.

    • Well said, this comment would fit the Fire Service equally well. I was always frustrated by the ‘cuts’ in the number of fire calls to hit performance targets that were achieved not by addressing the cause for the call but by manipulating statistics and changing the list of calls that will be attended and therefore counted by the Fire Service.

    • As the father of a long serving police officer I couldn,t agree more.
We have seen our son get more and more distressed at the state of the police service.

  7. What a great shame that you couldn’t follow this mantra when you were Commissioner. You were more political that most and shoiwed very little in the way of support for the troops. A true shame that you have only found your voice now. I would be interested to hear why you weren’t so outspokenly supportive of us when you led us? TC

    • I don’t think it is the real Ian Blair old son.

Good work though, keep it up.

EPetitions are generally ignored, but agree just one would be much better.

I have had a gun pulled on me, put my fingers in a man’s lung to stop him dying after he was stabbed, had my ear torn away from my head, and seen many other horrible things that I hope no one else ever has to see.

I haven’t seen my son awake in 3 weeks because I can be forced to work if required.

We are the people who find your parents dead on their floor. We are the pie

      • People who come round and tell you the truth. We are the ones who look after the people who society ignores, and protect those who the vast majority of people couldnt care less about. We will come when your husband has hit you for the fiftieth time, and we are the people who wash the blood from your road, so that never have to see it. We are the people who see evil every day, so you don’t have to. All we want is for society to keep the promise it made to us when we signed up. We want the contract honoured. That is all.

  8. As a retired Fire Officer I had to keep checking back to make sure he was not talking about the Fire Service leadership! I have the greatest respect for the Police and have often commented that I was impressed with the way that the Police Chiefs do stand up for their workforce but I accept that it does not happen enough and I have nothing but admiration for the words spoken here. I just hope that some Fire Chiefs read it and feel ashamed that they never support their staff in this way. Well done Sir.

  10. I have signed the petitions to strike and against the Windsor report. Unfortunately a lot of police officers seem scared to speak out through fear of their own carrea progression. They seem to have the mentality that the federation should be fighting for us but fail to realise that they are part of the federation and that the federation needs our support! Officers seem to think that there is nothing they can do but they are wrong. All it takes is for every officer in the land to hand in their driving tickets and firearms and the government will be forced into a change of heart! We need to be more like the French and all stand together to make this happen!

    • The problem you have is that certain officers will not hand in their firearm permits or advanced driving permits because they do not want to go back on shift patrol. I bet we can all think of those officers

      • Unbelievable ! We’re going through the worst times I can remember in my 11 years service with the police. Morale on the floor and worst to come yet you still have time to have a pop at other cops !! Shame on you mate ..

  11. Mr Blair, if only you were as outspoken as this when you were the boss! You towed the line and were the prime ministers puppet! You now have nothing to lose and no doubt are looking for a way In to politics and you are using this as a stepping stone to further enhance your rather hefty pension!

  12. Very rich coming from the man who got the whole centralisation bandwagon rolling with CCC, SNT’s Pcso’s and bought us the Delightful Mr McPherson from Norfolk who was hell bent on on getting rid of the 12 hour shift pattern worked and generally loved by most of those that worked it. All very well for Mr Blair to be saying all this now when he knows there will be no comebacks. Whilst I agree with most of what he says why was he not tackling these issues during his tenure. All very brave after the event!!!!!!!

  13. I’m afraid that there is no way this illiterate posting came from the former Met Commissioner … signed SIB???? Sir Ian Blair???? lol … whilst I agree fully with sentiments it is a ludicrous piece of prose to post suggesting it has come from a former Met Commissioner 🙂

  14. I should point out that the author of this is @sirianblair, whom I follow on twitter, and is a spoof account (which he clearly states on his twitter profile). He’s well worth a follow, speaks sense and is very entertaining as the head of the slapslapconstabulary.

  15. We would get more public support if the public actually knew the recommendations of Winsor Part 2. The media seemed to use the ‘bury bad news’ Tony Blair tactic by concentrating on the fitness test aspect, thus not highlighting the other more serious proposed reforms. I was talking to a Headteacher today who thought teachers were getting a bad deal until I told him about the main Winsor reforms, he was shocked and when I told him that we had no industrial rights he was horrified and said that without those rights we were an easy target.

To gain public support the Federation need to highlight to the General Public the effect Winsor 2 will have on the policing in England and Wales. At the moment they appear to be looking inward, I may be (and hope I am) wrong with this view, but everyone I speak has not heard of Winsor 2. As for ACPO, their lack of support and leadership will only enhance the mistrust that officers have for them. They should remember where they began and who they serve, not planning and scheming for their next career after leaving the police.

    • I have said this in various of these types of posts and have written to my Fed about publicity. Not a dicky bird in response. The Unions are quick enough to shout loudly and take up pages in papers and time on news programmes. Maybe the Fed don’t want to upset anyone. However, they should be banging on doors, writing their own articles if the press won’t interview them, post adverts for the public (we know what’s going on so putting them round the nicks serves no real purpose). Come on Federation, there is still time to raise the profile and let Joe Public know exactly what looms ahead it everything goes through.

  16. People, people, people…..the clue is in the first line of this excellent blog ~ @SirIanBlair ~ go to Twitter and check him out……you will see that he clearly states he is the SPOOF Sir Ian Blair, Commissioner of slapslapconstabulary….!!

Try not to take EVERYTHING at face value ~ there are actually coppers out there with a real sense of humour!!! Even during our darkest hour, the black humour that so defines the true British Bobby shines through brightly.

Nonetheless, this is a brilliant blog, with all the points accurately outlined ~ sign the petitions, join the march on 10th May, write and badger your MP ~ we need to make our message heard, so the Govt hear us.

  17. We just keep plodding on. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy as we are too professional, too willing to come in early or stay late. And for what thanks? The only thing that keeps this job ticking is our loyalty to the job we all choose. Good will is the back bone of what we do, and the powers that be prey on that. They know that 99% of us are in the job because we graft and we want to do our bit, and do that little bit more to make sure we provide a professional service.

As we march through London and make ourselves heard, I doubt it’ll even be noticed by the PM as he gets driven around by his CP officers, in his police protected little world. You can guarantee the media will find yet another story of a police officer being arrested, and that will take the focus off of us, again.

Too much emphasis is put on worrying about what the public think of us, and not on kicking in doors and dealing with those who prey on the weak, the vulnerable or the intimidated. Why? Glad you asked, because the powers that be are worried about the figures going up? The public must realise that its all a fiddle and a con, and that these figures aren’t worth a pnd? The more police officers, the more crime is reported and dealt with. The less police officers the less is recorded and dealt with. It’s as simple as that.

Crime doesn’t go up or down, its just there. It’s us that make it go up and down. However you can bet that all that gets said by these untrustworthy MPs is that the cuts aren’t effecting the front line policing of our streets. REALLY? Don’t be so naive. Were getting hammered, stressed and exhausted. Maybe that’s the plan? Get us to retirement eventually and we’ll all die within a few years and they’ll make a killing, on savings. I don’t understand why the media hasn’t cottoned on to this? Hang on, isn’t that what the Leverson enquiry is all about….. The media being lead by the government.

Why do we bother….? We bother because we’re professionals, and they know it!

    • Satire is not dead but this article does really hit the spot. The trouble with most public services is that leadership has been replaced with managing, the words say it all really, leading and managing could also be inspiring and coping. It’s all a play on words but we really need to see some top flight inspiring leadership, standing up for what they know is right rather than the look after ourselves just coping style of management inherent in today’s public services.

I remember being inspired by the old style lead from the front, wouldn’t ask someone to do they weren’t prepared to do themselves type of characters in the job and have always led that way myself, people always go the extra mile for that leadership and we are seeing payback for the I’m alright jack types now running the service. They see themselves well out of the trouble we’re in. They should remember you need troops to lead and at this rate there’ll be only a few left. Keep up the good work SIB.

  18. Inspiring article….the govt are very clever to state that only officers with more than 10 years service left will be affected by the reforms….this is so that it will not affect the senior officers who are expected to implement these changes. Officers need to fight for the police service as a whole and not just their own personal circumstances…

  19. There are no leaders in ACPO. Only managers. Leaders lead. From the front. Managers manage, and direct, from behind a desk. That is where we are.

  20. A good piece. As in other walks of life, the top bods lie low when the going is rough and then come out to milk the praise when it is there to be had. A REAL leader will back the staff through thick and thin. Apart from the sole ACPO voice who is now resigning, the tumble weed is sounding very loud. It’s a disgrace that we are being shafted by our own top line and they are not shouting from the roof tops about what is happening to the levels of the organisation where they started. It would be refreshing to see them turn up in force on 10th unannounced to show that they are backing us and are against the destruction being foisted on us by an arrogant Government. I wait to be refreshed!!!

  21. Very well put – I especially agree with the comments about the apathy shown by senior officers who are only interested in their own promotion. Not sure why the author thinks that CID officers think we’re immune, why have you singled us out? I expect Winsor to affect me as much as uniform officers.

    • Apologies, didn’t mean to single CID out, just wanted to make the point that some CID officers, I have been told, seem to think Winsor won’t affect them. Winsor will shake up resource planning, shifts, annual leave, time off, call at short notice, etc.

  22. This spoof article makes a lot of sense and I agree with almost every word… which is why it so obviously could not have come from one of the biggest causes of our current situation. Under the two Blairs millions were wasted on populist community projects, bean counting, and the progressive civilianisation of a once disciplined organisation. The logic goes the court cheap votes, and empty lawyers so they can line their pockets protecting the rights of the criminal. This otherwise excellent piece is greatly diminished by its purporting to come from our former commissioner.

  23. So refreshing to hear senior management: A) With a voice on this subject. B) To be supportive of both the value of policing and the rank and file officers that make this policing possible. Rank and file feel really isolated at the moment and the sound of the upper silence is deafening.

  24. A well written article, one question for the Fed though and that is, if the public are unaware of how the cuts will also affect them, and the media is only concentrating on things that affect officers like fitness, allowances etc, then why don’t the Fed force the medias hand, ie pay for some adverts to go into the papers?

    • I’ve been saying that since Winsor 2 was published. Sadly I think the march on 10 May will just be ignored by the Govt., They know there’s nothing the police can do ‘cos they do not have the same rights as every other worker. Many MPs are also totally unaware of what Winsor 2 involves. The media have only highlighted the fitness tests. The Fed need to publish full page adverts making the public aware of what is happening to the Police service in this country before its too late. Also what happened to the ballot for industrial rights? This seems to have just disappeared.

      • Exactly! Were there a ballot for Industrial rights, the intent to seek the European route and the march of 2008 a mirage?
WTF has the Fed done for the past 4 years with these issues, except consider the wine list at Leatherhead?

e pettition 31250 deals with this.

Colleagues have a PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY to explain to MP’s in person [not by letter or email] the impact of these vicious attacks on us and our families, and the dangerous illusion that the likes of G4S and PCSO’s are the future of policing FFS!

    • Excellent point. I was only suggesting this idea to my Fed Rep last week. Stick to the advertising guidelines and they can print pretty much what they like. Apparently it really upset No. 10. when they printed those posters in the Metro last time!!

  25. Wasn’t Condon the commissioner when the police were branded institutionally racist because his force messed up the Lawrence enquiry? And now he supports privatizing police roles!!!! The future is grim!

  26. Having served 32 years and have now been retired for 3 years, I am absolutely disgusted with the Government AND ACPO!! I will say ‘Hang your heads in shame!’ However, having stood up and voiced my opinions at The Great Hall in London when they were apposing Sheehy in 93 and spoke from the hip and the heart which every officer in attendance agreed with their hands and their feet…banged drums all the way up and all the way down and all for absolutely nothing! Sheehy still came in and Winsor will do the same. The Politicians do not give a monkeys about the Police, as a service or as individuals, it is all lip service, ACPO included.

They bank on the fact that the Police do not have the right to strike AND that as always every single one of you will endeavor to make the square peg fit in the round hole because you have and we always have had a conscience and the ACPO and Government always rely on the good old ‘Good will’ that we always seem to find no matter the circumstance and it happens every time.
I used to be laughed at back in the early 90’s when I attended AGM’s at Winchester (Hampshire served) when I stated that we will soon be Hampshire Constabulary PLC as the government are trying to run us as a business;no-one is laughing today. But then why should the government listen to us? Does it affect ‘their lives’? Has the Prime Minister relinquished his Police escorts/bodyguards in order to allow them to go back on the beat to ‘boost the numbers.’ Have their working conditions and pay and pensions been affected? No, no, no!!! Angry and frustrated is an understatement of the century with regards to how the past and present officers feel but having now retired it is even more apparent that we are ‘bums on seats’ end of!

The wheel is being reinvented but sadly back towards the 70’s when officers were having to claim benefits in order to survive…they also had a National ‘sick day.’To do this to all of you and eventually have the majority numbers being made up by PCSO’s = Anarchy!!….So if any of the ACPO ‘Team’ actually have the gall to read this for god sake grow some and stand and fight for your men and women!!! You are a disgrace to the service, not fit to wear the uniform and should all be arrested for obtaining wages by deception!!! Jean Wigmore

  27. There’s a simple answer that cannot be ignored….resign…all of us, every member of the federated ranks, everyone…RESIGN! They’ll have to take emergency action to re-employ us ON OUR TERMS!

  28. The day you earn less that a Train Driver came and went many years ago (unless your well up the ladder). Just thought I’d point that out as an ex bobby and current Train Driver earning over 50 grand a year for pulling a few leavers and doing a 35 hour week. Bit of a poor comment actually, it suggest that bus/train drivers are somehow low quality people and god forbid you end up like them eh?

Well we’ve just agreed another 5% payrise for this year, keep bigging yourself up and enjoy your 0% rise.

  29. Excellent post. I am shocked by how little these proposals are being discussed at my station. Head in the sand does not sum it up strongly enough!

  30. Oh… So, because I’m young in service, I don’t understand/care about what’s going on? I just want to drive fast and catch criminals?

    Thanks…

    • No, but some are apathetic and some fear standing up. Also some will not miss what they don’t have. Please don’t take that comment in isolation. If you didn’t care you wouldn’t have responded.

      • I appreciate the reply. But what you just said goes for every bobby who doesn’t express an opinion, not just youngsters.

Hell, I’m not even on the pay-roll, being a special, but I still have grave concerns about these cuts because they will affect me too. That’s why I will march, for my colleagues who don’t deserve this smack in the face.

      • Fantastic Jason…I take my hat off to you 🙂 Really proud of you even though I don’t know you!!.Jean Wigmore

      • Cheers both. We have a choice. We stand up and make our voices heard or we let them walk all over the conditions of service. I’m with you both. We own our own destiny.

  31. not only are we being treated poorly and pay the highest portion into pensions we cannot strike. those like the fire brigade can strike and from what i hear have had a reduction in pension contribution. if we all paid the same amount into to pot the black hole would vanish. lets get the judges on 1% and the nurses teachers and other services paying the same it makes sense to me but i am not a polition

  32. People thought Sheehy was bad when the report was first released. This variant is the end of Policing as the public knows it, yet they live in blissfull ignorance of what may be coming their way.

  33. Hmmm… I am one of the “young ones” and a couple of things spring to mind.

Our shift patterns are hard work, but we fare very well compared to others. We could be working 90hour weeks like junior doctors who are paid less than a 2-year PC. Nobody gives them double-time for working a day off a less than 5 days notice. Nobody insists they have 11 hours between duties. We can’t argue that their job requires less dedication or is risk-free (judging by the number of times I’ve been called to A&E to deal with public order). The same can be said for midwives. Or for the AA drivers. Or for our soldiers getting shot and blown-up overseas. They have it worse…

Like most of the “young ones”, I am EMBARRASSED by the constant moaning and whinging of colleagues about “how hard it is”. Take five minutes to browse the job adverts and see how well you are paid for a job that doesn’t require a single pass at O-level. Consider how offensive what you say in the parade room about how “shite” everything is can be to all the Specials who want to get into this job as a regular. Or to those of us who don’t enjoy the benefit of SPP, or CRTP, or rent-allowance, or the 10-year pay point.

Perhaps think about how many of your friends get full-pay for six months if they are ill or injured (don’t play the “injured-on-duty card either. I’m talking about when you bugger your knee on a skiing holiday andget signed off by the FMO for 16 weeks).

If you don’t like it – go and do something else. Oh I forget – you CAN’T – because you have become desperately institutionalised and fail to realise that your “experience” is completely non-transferable to the wider world and no other employer would pay you half as much as you earn as a copper. Seriously you lot: Man the f*** up.

(Oh, and I have 2 kids and am in my thirties, just to clarify…)

    • Each to their own. You won’t miss what you didn’t have yet you do compare the benefits that others get which you don’t. Skills are transferable though. That’s one point. You cannot expect operationally fit bobbies at 65. Life expectancy beyond retirement is not good. So the protests aren’t officers whining as you suggest, it’s about, well ask your Fed Rep, I’m sure they’ll tell you. When the govt. takes away your rights what will you do? Nothing. That’s entirely your choice. It’s not easy to compare qualified Dr’s with officers. For one, their long term remuneration is better. Secondly they probably won’t work changing shifts till 60/65. And they don’t face life threatening situations as front line officers do. Each to their own. I take it you won’t be protesting?

    • Wow, wow, wow. Good luck ‘young one’. You will learn and you will develop and then you will understand the folly of your words. Your facts are wrong re Dr and AA working hours. I don’t know about midwives. I don’t know where you work or what your role is but my goodness, humility hasn’t found it’s way to you yet.

Furthermore, you’ve really missed the point. It’s about the future of policing. It’s about the safety of the public. It’s about accountability. I am glad you are happy in your job – long may that continue. I hope you find yourself able to do a good job – I assume you do a good job now – and the pressure does not change that for you and your family.

For the rest of you, police, civilian staff, members of the public – look at the information, read the reports. It’s plain to see. There is only one choice and that is to oppose these changes with all your heart and all your mind.

    • @ OneOfTheYoungOnes,

I think you need to get some experience under your belt dear boy. Man up you say, I have dealt with situations that would make you shi1t your pants. I have put myself in harms way more times that I can remember. I know your type, you will be the one carrying out PNC checks on vehicles in isolated areas whilst your colleagues are fighting on the floor with the violent drunks in the town. I bet you are the gutless type who won’t speak out against a senior officer if they are making a stupid decision or ordering you to do something that you don’t agree with and realise that it’s not a lawful order.it is spineless fools like you that has ruined the police force.

Oh and for the record I have started looking for other employment, I won’t allow myself to be shafted and I can’t take clowns like you any longer.

    • Phew! I’d like to think this is just a provocative comment to grab a response. However, from things said in it, I can only presume it is from a serving Bobby who is not fully aware of the full implications of what is afoot.

Prior to joining the Police, I spent 12 years in the Army, including a stint in Northern Ireland, and then when I left went onto spend a longer period working in industry, before redundancy. I joined the Police, not for the money, but to give something back to society and also for the variety that the role has. It was also a secure job to take me to retirement. I am now in my 50s and, despite numerous comments about ageing officers, intend to continue to do the role as long as I can by maintaining my fitness, professionalism and a positive attitude to the task. Having not served anywhere near the 30 years normal for someone of my age, I have not experienced that many years of shift work and so feel I can continue.

Why am I marching? Not for money, though, not having reached the ten year point by a couple of years I too have had my increments frozen and, like you, am not on CRTP. I am marching because that is the only sanction we have, in our own time, to demonstrate that the Government is about to totally screw the role and office of Constable and which will also have a major impact on the community we serve. As member of the public, would you want to find that your call for help was going to be carried out by someone after your call has been considered against a profit and loss account and therefore not of much importance; or by someone who has a mandated rest break and so can’t make it just now but “we’ll be there when we can”; or who may not have the professionalism and can-do attitude of a police officer to thoroughly see the job to the end? I could go on.

Don’t bury your head in the sand and don’t accuse other officers of whinging about their lot. Yes it is their lot, but it is also the lot of other officers and of the role overall. I am in the same category as you and my head is above the parapet. This WILL affect you. THINK ABOUT IT!

  34. http://cumbriapolfed.org.uk/

    Ladies and gents
Could I trouble you all to have a look at this.
Inspector Lee Skelton from Cumbria police is raising money for the kids of recently deceased PC 2057 Craig Postlethwaite, who died in an RTC. He was a top man and good friend. He had just passed his AFO course and was a week away from starting his new role.

He is survived by three children and his partner, who is also job, and a first class bobby.

Inspector Skelton will cycle from Cumbria to Bournmouth fed conference as a fund raiser for Craig’s family.

Please feel free to donate, should you feel the urge. He was a great bloke, a great cop and sorely missed. We are hoping the police family will now support our extended police family, Craig’s partner And kids.

    Thanks for your time.

  35. The Coalition has taken a severe beating today in the local elections, Labour may feel smug but this is merely a protest to the current Government whom don’t seem to have much of a clue what to do next. Now is the time for the Federation and the membership to get their message across and demonstrate how fundamentally flawed the Winsor report is, it is quite apparent that officers will not get any assistance from the Superintendents or ACPO association due to the fact that they are self serving cretins whom have no real consciences save for their own nasty greedy selves. It is important that the momentum is applied with every means possible to crush the threat to British Policing. If it takes blue flu at the opening of the Olympics so be it!

  36. I am a career Detective. I’m 40 looking 60, missed my children growing up and I’m on my second marriage.I’ve got 11years left to run (or so I thought) because I helped loads of other people before myself and my family. I came to London 4 years ago, put on my white cap and quietly protested to the home secretary, like a good little boy, because she would not honour a pay agreement.

I will NOT make the same mistake twice. I’m coming to London on Thursday, I’m going to be loud and I’m not going to be good. I’m going to look for the radio boys, journo’s and TV cameras and I’m going to tell them that 160 thousand coppers, all their family members, their children and their childrens children will NEVER vote for this government again and are going to vote them out of Downing Street and laugh at them when they are packing their bags. I will ensure that they get the message that they should be ashamed of themselves. If I don’t get the chance make sure you all do this too.

I will put a call out to the protection teams, who are Police Officers whose job it is to ensure the security of these government ministers. Stop protecting for a minute and ask for a quiet word with the person who relies on you for their safety/existence/life and tell them that they need to pin their ears back and listen to the RANK AND FILE coppers, not the highly paid barristers, and that we will tell our communities at all levels (because you have now made us take a political side) that you are just CRIMINALS in good clothes. (we call you white-collar criminals in CID, amongst other things).

We are experts at intelligence. I call on the intelligence gathering community. Tell me where Tom WINDSOR will be on the day of the march? Lets leak that out and put him in fear of his fate for a bit. Return the favour so-to-speak.

WINDSOR, yes I’m talking to you mate, you criticise the Police for the way we carry out our duties? We’d have a field day if we called the legal profession to account for themselves. The term white collar criminal is made for you and most of your mates. We might just pay a few good journalists to dig the dirt on you and a few of your friends and family just to discredit you like you have with us. It wouldn’t take them long I’m sure. It would be nice actually to see you in Crown Court behind the glass. We’ve asked the lads at the Scrubs to save a cell for you.

I’m fed up of being a good lad. I’m not happy about the way I have been treated by this government and their advisors. If that chimp with the placard in the middle of the road is there this time, saying ‘The Police are overpaid, I want my rights…’ He can stand by. And his mates.

The Met bobbies on duty that day are all on our side as well. Remember that.

Oh and if anyone knows if their ACPO or Supts command are coming, push them to the cameras, reporters and radio and lets see if they have the cohonies to make a stand.

  37. A very good read and well put together statement. But will it spur ACPO or the Supt’s Association into action? I fear not!
See you at the march on Thursday.

  38. These are not casual reforms; as there is no real economic crisis. This is the coordinated preparation of the masons rulling the government toghether with the royal elite to create chaos by weakening and daunting the men and women in uniform preserving law and order, because they are the backbone of the civilized society. We all know too many examples of criminals of all kinds and types being set free despite their crimes and prejudices, but make no mistake: these are not casual facts. These are coordinated actions of the masonic elite ruled by the semites in order to destroy all the other nations of the Earth by creating mayhem and imorality, including inside the mainly christian english people, thus fulfilling the word of God to Abraham stipulating that semites will rule all the other nations. In a subtile way, God tells us that this means the semites, wich will be on top of things all over the world will come to be the last onces at last, once Mesia arrived for the second time. After so many improvments in all the fields of mass producing the means we need to survive in a decent way we found out that we are all in the deepest ever public debt, as german, english, american, japanese, french, romanian, italian, spanish, in a nutshell all non-semites peoples in the Masonic Empire (comprising USA, USSR and the offsprings after its collapse, EU, Africa, South America, Japan, Australia, India, etc), whereas the semites, namely saudi-arabians, jews, turkish are in no debt whatsoever. Think about it. The jews controlling our finances by the masons occupying the manager seats in all economic and political institutions all over the Mason Empire simply steal the money under their control and send them to Saudi Arabia, Israel, Switzerland and other masonic hubs whilst telling us our lives are not profitable. They simply want to exterminate us all, especially the christian peoples. In order to do that they must create mayhem on streets, on any social structure, they must impose imorality and sodomy by movies, songs and public political support, and for this the police must be under strict masonic control, must be thus disorganised, corrupted, undermined and compromised by means of the masons on top of it. It’s not about being anti-semitic or something like this because i’m telling these things, as i love the Bible wich is written by the prophets, apostles and the misterious aprentice of Jesus, all of them jews, i just love the truth, i see the examples of the faithfull jews and i’m sad to notice that the christian, civilized society is being given the fatal punch these days by the masono-semites without faith that are on top of our society all over the empire, from London to New York, from Paris to Bucharest, from Sao Paolo to Sidney. Our role models are the whores and the pimps, thieves and crooks, sodomists, anti-christians and satanists. A monster lurks in our highest cabinets of political and managing control all over the Masonic Empire, and the monster is about to be released full swing, and thus we’ll found ourselves dwindled drastically whilst on tv and all the masonic media we’ll be time and again bombarded with the slogan that we are too many, and as the christians will fade away the semites and indians will take over the territory. A civilized society is the one in which the rule of general living is that of not accepting, by Love, the crime, the fornication, the stealling, the perjury against another one, the covet for things that are not yours; that’s the true christian, that’s the christian society, not anything else, public or particular pray. That’s the true pray.

  40. Well said Jean (Wigmore), you were scary 9 years ago at Fratton!, I’m less than ten, 5 years real world, 24 years RN, I too have seen life, I’m marching because I’m disgusted with what is proposed, as for management, we haven’t got any. Previously when Police were respected most of the SM had served in the military and thus were trained in LEADERSHIP, now the word ‘leadership’ isn’t in the political correctness/council speak dictionary so it’s no longer a issue!

  41. Very well said, the silence from the top has been as usual deafening due I have no doubt to the vested interests of those further up that greasy pole. What they don’t seem to get is that while they think this may not DIRECTLY affect them, there may come a time when they or a member of their family pick up that phone and hit the 9’s – only to be told their “call is important to us but we are experiencing high demand, can we suggest calling back between the hours of….”. I have a young family, I fear for them, not out of any selfish financial reason but because I see how this wonderful job is being utterly destroyed by gutless, 2 faced senior officers and politicians who only have their own agenda I mind. This is a public service, they would do well to remember that. As the saying goes, “those that can, do, those that can’t, manage”.

  42. Of course it could all be a political ploy to play a statistical game and show how well the Cons are doing – cons being the operative word – as for leadership – I don’t see any leadership in this country sadly it is all about jockeying for the best pension and stuff anyone who gets in their way – to stand and voice opposingly will be met with serious and malicious lashbacks – trust me – having been the brunt of this just bear in mind it is not a question of all who dont protest take one step back it is a full united front for all police staff lets not forget the support staff – the controllers and the like, some of whom aren’t police officers and who will get an equally raw deal although in fairness they DO have a right to strike. Long live humanity and human rights – I am not a police officer past or present but I respect the work they do and feel that if we as a country dont support them then let’s consider anarchy and the impact that would have on our lives. Who would we call when we have thugs taking our cars, breaking into our homes, running people down as they plase chase on the highways. Who would we want to help us when someone beats up our elderly parents/grandparents or rapes our sons and daughters.

We have to have a good police force – yes an efficient one but for goodness sake dont look at those who do the ground work look at those who make policies for they clearly have lost all understanding of the work on the coal face. Chopping and changing shifts without warning enforcing ridiculous houes and patterns that almost encourage divorce – get a grip before its too late

  43. @TaffTaff

Yes I’m all of those things you say I am, if that makes you happy. You presume to know so much about me, but since you can’t even get my gender right (I am a woman: we have them in the Police now you know), I think we can safely say your other assumptions about me are equally flawed.

March if you want, it’s a futile exercise….

    • Taff Taff, you are obviously destined for greater things [or so you believe] this is not a futile excercise but you obviously like and agree with the Winsor recommendations, perhaps you would like to be one of the chosen few to get direct entrants to Supt without knowing a thing about the Job….you very shallow person.

  44. Sir , this is a well balanced and realistic account of how the police is and the dangers the police force faces .
I commend you , as a high ranking officer to support and voice an opinion that is shared by so many . Unfortunately the many do not have a voice on their own and urge colleagues of the lower ranks ( like myself) to support the federation .
We are sick of being treated as if we can be steam rollered by governments and so called senior ‘ leaders ‘ !

  45. Drastic times calls for drastic measures, continually the police are doormats for politicians and governments. Start playing tough and decide to debate strike action. This to me is the only way we can make politicians take instant notice and to listen FAST…. July in London might be a good time to start !!!!

  46. E-petitions and standard letters to MP’s are worthless. We have no power to do anything about these attacks apart from leave, exactly what the Government wants so that their private security company owning mates can move in and earn more money.
We are fcuked and there is absolutely nothing we can do. A big march in London will be shouted down with stories about our four hour claims or overtime and fat useless bobbies who can’t pass a pathetic fitness test.
Do the best job you can but remember it is now just a job like any other. Work out what skills you have ready to jump ship when it all goes belly up or you are surplus to requirements and given 28 days notice o redundancy.

  47. I totally agree with every thing said here. I believe that the police at present are being lead by a hieracy so far removed from day to day policing and out of touch with their workforce. They are only interested in making themselves look good and moving up that next rank.

  48. Full support from across the pond..tempted to hop on a plane and BE there..History in the making, NOW is the time to stand strong, united and unafraid. The truth will prevail!
